Port Charlotte
Geography
Port Charlotte is located 100 miles south of Tampa and 65 north of Naples. One of the largest communities in Charlotte County, Port Charlotte occupies a land mass of 32 square miles and has an approximate population of 54,000. Situated on the shores of Charlotte Harbor, Port Charlotte boasts one of the world’s largest protected marine estuaries, encompassing 270 sq mi and 2149 mi of natural shoreline. Charlotte Harbor’s confluence of the Peace and Myakka rivers comprises some of the most vibrant coastal areas in the state and a matchless network of barrier islands and mangrove forests, including Boca Grande, Palm Island, Don Pedro Island, Little Gasparilla Island, and Manasota Key.
Attractions
Centrally located yet an oasis unto itself, Port Charlotte was named one of the Best Places to Retire by Money Magazine. Thanks to its vast amenities, top-ranked medical facilities, world-class fishing, and outstanding values in housing, Port Charlotte is the kind of sweet secret the Gulf Coast can no longer keep! One of Florida’s premiere ecotourism destinations, the beaches of Charlotte Harbor & the Gulf Islands are easily accessible yet quiet and remote. Their shores attract an abundance of birds, dolphins, sea turtles and other wildlife, but not the big crowds of many of the other Gulf beaches. In addition to the preserves and beaches, natural amenities include fishing, paddling and sailing. For athletes and sports fans, the area is home to 16 golf courses and numerous annual sporting events and recreational facilities, including Port Charlotte Beach Park.
Home to Major League Baseball’s Tampa Bay Rays’ spring training, the recently renovated Charlotte Sports Park is a record-setting facility where fans can relax and enjoy America’s pastime. Also home to the Florida State League’s Charlotte Stone Crabs, the Park boasts a 360 degree concourse, tiki bar and children’s play area.
When the sun sets over Port Charlotte and the stars have begun to shine, the Port Charlotte nightlife can keep anyone entertained. Whether you’re a true gourmand or prefer familiar favorites, Port Charlotte offers cuisines of every ethnicity and style, from the locally owned and operated pubs and cafes to the well known franchises. After dinner visit the theatre, comedy clubs, or listen and dance to live music.
